The Orphanage left me with questions?

I just saw the movie last night and I thought it was excellent, but there were just two question I was left to ponder afterwards. I tried doing a quick online search, but all I could find were summaries and reviews, so maybe you picked up on something I did not see.

1. Simon was wearing the sack during the party, so he pushed his mom and locked her in the bathroom. The thing I did not understand, however, was why Simon sounded like he was growling or making other unnatural noises when before Laura tried to take off the sack.

2. In the beginning, Laura talks about the lighthouse and why it doesn't work anymore. She makes it seem like it's this big secret but, to my knowledge, we never learn why it doesn't work, or I didn't catch the significance behind it.

I almost forgot my third question!

3. I assume Benigna, the social worker lady, was trying to kill Laura because she killed the other orphans and thought Laura was somehow responsible for Tomas' death. But why was she with a stroller with a doll in it when she was killed?
